How the Name Morning Star was Chosen

The name Morning Star was chosen to give honor to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and to ask for her intercession for our staff, our patients, and their families.

According to Catholic tradition, the title of Morning Star is given to the Blessed Mother of our Lord. Just as the morning star announces the coming of the day, appearing in the sky and reflecting the light of the sun, "Mary appeared on the horizon of salvation history before Christ,"1 and shows us the way to Him. She reflects the light of the Creator and Redeemer and exalts His glory.

From her humble assent welcoming Jesus into her life to her faithful witness at the foot of the cross, she is a model for all believers. But, in a special way, Mary knows the blessings and trials of motherhood. This can be a comfort for women in particular. As her cousin Elizabeth proclaimed, "Blessed are you among women" (Lk 1:42).

Mary has played a special role in my vocation as an obstetrician/gynecologist. While praying in the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in January 2000, I realized that I would have her protection if I entered the specialty geared towards the care of women. Dr. John Bruchalski, who was my preceptor at the time, explained that Our Lady of Guadalupe promised Juan Diego (and all her children) he would be in the folds of her mantle despite his lack of courage for his mission. She has been a source of consolation for me during the final years of medical school, four years of residency training, and now as I start private practice as a physician faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

At Morning Star Obstetrics and Gynecology, we recognize that Mary points the way to Christ, the Divine Healer. We hope to follow her example of courage, humility, and fidelity in our practice to bring the healing ministry of Christ to our patients and their families.
